In fact, when the President Ho Chi Minh passed away he expressed the wish to be cremated, and to have his ash scattered all over the country, so that land can be saved for agricultural production. However, in honor of the President’s huge dedication for the country, the Vietnamese government decided to keep his body so that the following generations can come and visit him, just like other countries holding the embalmed remains of Lenin, Stalin and Mao, the great communist leaders before him. Accordingly, his mausoleum started to be built in1973 inBa Dinh Square, where he read theVietnam's Declaration of Independence, and was completed about two years later.
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, which was made of marble and granite, features a three-stored structure. In the second store places the famous President’s body, lying as if he were sleeping in the simple clothes worn when he was alive. Outside, visitors can see his popular quote in Vietnamese which can be translated as “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” on top face of the mausoleum. In front of the mausoleum are 79 cycad trees, symbolizing Ho’s 79 springs of life.
Special attention should be paid when visiting the mausoleum since it is a venerable place. No shorts, singlet, or sleeveless shirts are allowed and there is high level of security check upon arrival. Day packs can be put in a safe deposit before you enter. Taking photos, talking, laughing or finger-pointing are strictly prohibited inside the mausoleum. Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum might be closed occasionally for maintenance so check before you go.
