Ho Chi Minh City, often still referred to as Saigon, is the largest and most populated city in Vietnam by far. It is not only a commercial center but also a scientific, technological, industrial and tourist center of the country. Located in the south of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City covers an area of 2,095.5 sq. km, comprising 24 districts, i.e. 5 outlying named suburban districts, 7 named and 12 numbered urban districts, though tourists rarely travel beyond districts One, Three and Five.
As a result of the sweeping economic changes wrought by reforms in 1986, Ho Chi Minh City has changed its image from that of a war-torn city to one of a thriving metropolis, challenging Singapore,Bangkokand other traditional Southeast Asian powerhouses. Nowadays, Ho Chi Minh City is a mesmerizing gateway for visitors to Vietnam where traditional and modern influences live side by side. Incense-filled pagodas packed with a constant stream of worshippers; streets buzzing with the engines of countless motorbikes; pavements teeming with street vendors; gleaming shopping malls filled with imported luxury goods...the city is loved by tourists for its contrasts between old and new, local traditions and international trends.
There are two seasons in Ho Chi Minh City: the dry season, running from December through to April, is the best time to visit this tropical city, and the wet season, from May to November, during which there are frequent tropical storms though they won't disrupt your travels too much.
