Hanoi Cathedral

Hanoi Cathedral, also known as Saint Joseph's Cathedral, or simply called “BigChurch” by locals ofHanoi, is a Roman Catholic cathedral with neo-gothic style. Inaugurated on Christmas Day 1886, the cathedral is the oldest church inHanoi.

The cathedral is located at Pho Nha Chung, orNha Chung Street, a short distance from theHoanKiemLake. To make way for the Hanoi Cathedral, the former foreign governor demolished the Bao Thien Pagoda, an ancient Vietnamese pagoda that dated from the 12th century Ly Dynasty standing on the site. The cathedral was designed to resemble the Notre Dame ofParis, though its appearance, from the doors, the stained glass windows, to the religious paintings for decoration follows western style, the main interior part is decorated in Vietnamese way with two typical colors yellow and red. In front of the cathedral is the statue of the Mary.

Nowadays, the area surrounding the cathedral becomes a popular gathering place to many youngsters inHanoi, and home to eye-catching souvenir shops and western style restaurants. Since temples located everywhere inVietnam, paying a visit to the majestic sight of this cathedral may be an unique experience. But note that the front doors of Hanoi Cathedral are usually bolted shut except mass being held, remember to enter via the side door.
