Built in 1857 by King Mindon (who reined from 1853 to 1878) of Konbaung Dynasty, the last dynasty of Myanmar, the square Old Mandalay Palace is just seated at the southern foot of Mandalay Hill which covers 4 square kilometers. The splendid King Palace is just sit in the heart of the Old Mandalay. The Old Mandalay is enclosed by a moat and maintains complete ancient city walls and gate towers of Myanmar style. Though built in simple architecture system, it clearly reflects the history and culture of the dynasty.
Though being an old city existing for over one hundred years, the Old Mandalay Palace still houses the Myanmar General Headquarters, guarded by soldiers at the four city gates, and the commons still living inside. The most distinctive feature of the Old Mandalay Palace is that it connects the vibrant city outside but embraces a village inside.
