According to historical records, when King Narapatisithu (who ruled Myanmar from 1174 to 1211) ascended Tuywin, he catched sight a ruby sparkling in low-lying land and attributed it to the indication of the Buddha. Therefore, he had Sulamani Temple build here. In 1183, the two-storey Sulamani Temple was finished. The temple is a typical pagoda style of later Bagan Kingdom and offers the most beautiful plaster sculptures in Bagan.
The two terraces of Sulamani Temple are both in square, with stupas accompanying in the surrounding. The whole temple has four gates; the eastern one is the largest. Each is decorated with mezzo-relievo of minitype stupas; massive shapes of flame and triangle are also utilized on gate posts. In terms of art style, the decoration of the temple is the Indian style.
