Shwegugyi, means the Golden Cave, also known as Nandaw Oo Paya, which means the pagoda in the front of the palace, was built in 1131. It was the site King Alaungsithu (1113-1163) smothered by his son King Narathu (a tyrant only reined from 1167 to 1170 and was assassinated eventually). The pagoda has an Indian style sikhara, a corncob shape, and decorated with plaster carvings on its interior wall.
Visitors can ascend the pagoda to the viewing terrace to get an excellent view of eastern area of Bagan pagodas, especially to catch the amazing view of the most graceful Ananda Pahto and Thatbyinyu Temple during a sunrise.
