Mahabodhi Temple

Location: in the old town of Bagan.

Being the only Indian-Bangladesh style Buddhism pagoda in Bagan, Mahabodhi Temple is an imitation of the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya of India, the world famous Buddhism holy land and the enlightenment site of Gautama Buddha.


Built in 1215, Mahabodhi Temple is said to be the youngest pagoda in Bagan. The Mahabodhi Pagoda of the temple is standing in the middle, surrounding by 6 small stupas, all of which are supported on a quadrate base. The pagoda is a pyramid shape and imbedded with niches, each enshrines a sitting Buddha.


Not far away from Mahabodhi Temple is an inglorious temple named Nwapyaga, behind which is another temple named Myinpyagu. They are of primitive simplicity and easily to be ignored by tourists if without a map.
