You need to visit the Royal Palace Museum if you want to know some knowledge about Luang Prabang history. It was firstly built as the house of King Sisavangvong and his family, close to Mekong River in 1904. When the king passed away in 1959, his son Savang Vattana made the king. But he was banished to the north of Laos because of the revolution. And then this royal palace was rebuilt into a museum.
In the grand entrance hall, there are many royal or religious utensils, and some rarely seen Buddha statues collected from India, Cambodia and Laos. Rooms on the right of the palace are open for the visitors. You can see the most valuable artworks of the museum, such as the Pha Bang, a standing golden Buddha after which the city was named. The wall paintings in the reception hall were painted by the Alix de Fautereau of French in 1930. Because of the lights, every paining should be appreciated in different time of the day.
Shoes and photographing are not allowed in the museum, and your bags should be taken care of by the officers. Besides, foreigners are not allowed to get into the museum in T-shirt, shorts or skirt.
