Wat Si Saket, which stands inside the Vientiane city wall, 250 meters from Mekong River, and adjacent to the royal palace, is Lao’s most famous temple in the history. Built in 1818 by the last king of the Kingdom of Lan Xang, the temple covers a large floor area with its exquisite shape designed in Thailand style combined with some elements from Lao and Burmese architecture. This imposing temple is a best prove of the flourishing cultural art of Laos in early 19th century. Wat Si Saket survived in the war in 1829 though lost majority of its collected cultural relics. Now it only maintained one big Buddha, 2 bronze Buddha and 120 small Buddha on its corridor. These Buddha are collected from various regions of the country, some even has a history over 1200 years.
